Tech Debt: How to Scale your Tech Startup and Avoid This Hidden Balance Sheet Risk
Benjamin Braun
Benjamin Braun
202 Group, Chief Architect

In scaling companies as quickly as possible, non-technical founders often butt heads with technology and product in the process. A “let’s get it built as quickly as possible to close this sale” mindset may look like an asset on your books when the contract is signed. But the “tech debt”– the backlog created when writing unsustainable, non-reusable code – created in the process to deliver on that contract is a hidden balance sheet risk.

Like racking up debt on your credit card, companies don’t just have to pay their tech debt but often pay interest in the process – with sneaky creditors calling debt due when you least expect it. That’s why in this workshop, Benjy Braun who is the Chief Architect of the DC-based, tech start-up 202 Group (as well as the company’s first non-founder employee) will explain everything non-technical founders need to know about tech debt. Participants can expect to walk away with:

• A better understanding of what tech debt is and why it’s a balance sheet issue – not just a tech team issue • Tips for balancing the need to scale rapidly with scaling sustainability (spoiler: not all tech debt is bad) • Frameworks for how non-technical and technical executives can better communicate in support of shared business goals • Strategies for paying back the debt you have without sacrificing customer contracts in the process

The bad news is that tech debt is one of the biggest hidden balance sheet issues affecting fast-growing start-ups. The good news is that once you make a mindset shift you can accelerate strategies for scaling your business sustainably.

You’ve tried a ton of marketing strategies, but they aren’t leading to consistent conversions nor a steady business pipeline. Why aren't you reaching your sales targets?

Sales is a relationships and personality game where gaining absolute clarity on your intention for each prospect is key. In this session, we’ll explore how the most innate and successful transactions aren't merely based on knowledge and credentials, but majorly on The Identifiability Factor. You’ll learn how to optimize your sales cycle by using three simple steps to ideate a product or service that acts as a “Familiar Surprise.”

From sharing real life stories to hypothetical laughs, Amani will dig into the true essence of sales, from how to win over a tough crowd, incorporate authenticity into your pitch, and build relationships that have a long lasting impact. Most importantly, you’ll learn how to convince yourself before anyone else.
