FROM CLUELESS TO SUCCESS is a collection of 20 backstories from the professional journey of a seasoned communications professional. In the book, she documents how she started her career in communications in an internship role she entered into quite cluelessly, she recounts the mistakes she made, valuable lessons learned, and how she was able to seize opportunities to drive success.

Join the author for an intimate reading followed by an interactive discussion touching on the following:
[1] Building an impactful career as a communications professional
[2] Becoming a professional that is known for adding value
[3] Collaborating to create positive narratives about the continent

ABOUT THE BOOK
'From Clueless To Success' shows young professionals and even entrepreneurs that it is ok not to have everything figured out, but they must be willing enough to take risks and not be afraid to fail. The book is also a reflection on the different transitions in my career journey – looking at where I fell short or failed and what I could have done better. It also provides the behind the scenes perspective of how I developed the idea for The Comms Avenue community (a capacity-building and knowledge exchange platform for communications professionals) which today has over 600 professionals from 15 African countries by spotting a gap and making a decision to do something about it.

Today, everything is digital and it’s nearly impossible for many of us to imagine a life without technology, and art continually branches into new forms and integrates new technology including digital media, virtual reality, augmented reality, gaming platforms, crypto-currencies, blockchain and non-fungible tokens. This session explores the intersection of art and technology, and its ability to transport viewers to diverse realities where static expression is transformed into lifelike experiences and the very nature of life on earth is like a toy.

The session further delves into the innovation of NFTs and how it has introduced new artists to the art market while creating a growing speculative frenzy among buyers and an intervention of digital assets available in limited quantities tracked on the blockchain. The versatility of NFTs enables artists to harness their artistic freedom and it permits much greater accessibility to the art world and increased sales beyond traditional revenue streams and the gallery sales chain. On the other hand, some argue that digital art and NFTs are not real because they are computer-generated and not physically tangible. However, the artistic techniques must progressively develop and reflect growth in the context of contemporary times.

As art continues to evolve and provide new ways to experience the world, this session poses the question of What is the future of art and technology? How does art predict and reveal the future? How will art exhibitions change in the future? How will digital art revolutionize the global art market? What is the longevity of the blockchain and NFTs?

The African art ecosystem has evolved and risen at an exponential rate on the global stage with the increase of art fairs on the continent, galleries dedicated to promoting a larger appreciation of art from Africa and digital tools to make it accessible to both local and international audiences. This has been matched by the influx of artists on the continent and its diaspora—you have more people who know they can survive as artists, curators and cultural workers. The increase in value and awareness of what is commonly labelled as “African Art” shows indicators of a flourishing ecosystem and market. However, this evokes the question of How to build a sustainable African art ecosystem? How was the African art ecosystem structured before 2010? What is the motivation and core interests of key players who have supported the evolution of African art? What appears to be the future trend and recommendation to maintain a sustainable African art ecosystem?

*** THIS SESSION IS BY INVITATION. FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN ONLY ***

This will be a creative writing workshop aimed at children. We are specifically looking to address the lack of African authors and stories out there and accessibility to those stories.

Sharing our unique stories and seeing others who look like us in the media fosters a sense of belonging and connection that’s vital for us to feel included, appreciated and validated.

Right now we are looking at an African creative renaissance and it is important that we do not leave the children, our future, out of the movement. By sharing with them the skills and techniques of creative writing, we give birth to more thought narrative in this direction. We are empowering the next generation to dream about possibilities they may not have entertained or felt entitled to.

To grow this industry, we need more people with the skills. Let's lay the strong foundation now. It is time.

This conversation would be had with three creatives who in their different sectors have put in the work whilst always constantly dreaming and looking for opportunities to make their dreams become a reality. The guests from the podcast have recently come to the limelight but this conversation would help people see and understand how your dreams can inspire you, shape your life, and do what makes you come alive.

In this conversation, we would cover,
-    How Dreams gives us direction
-    How dreams increase our potential
-    How dreams help us prioritize
-    How dreams predict our future

This conversation is definitely one that we will believe will help listeners see what they can become by chasing their dreams, and how the pursuit of our dreams, that makes the journey worth it.  We want to show people and encourage people to let their dreams sit on the shelf.  Live them.  Breathe them.  Be that change you always wanted.

We would also be giving away a dream journal to all listeners on the day to help them begin the process of documenting what Life could become for them.

Africa generates 100 million metric tonnes of food yearly, equivalent to $4bn, which could feed 44 million people (Gabon, Botswana, Gambia, Namibia, Eritrea, Mauritania, Congo, Liberia and Gambia combined). 30-40% of this yield never makes it to the consumer due to post-harvest food loss/waste during the procurement, transportation and distribution process.

Our panel will offer insights on how and why the agritech sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors in Africa, agriculture's contributions to socio-economic growth and most importantly emerging trends in Africa's food industry. Pranayama means breathing techniques. Breathing techniques are very essential in accessing the nervous system.

For people who live in major cities like Lagos, where there’s a need to be on the go to stay active it’s easy to get burnt out. One main reason for this is most people don’t breathe well and deep enough. If we can learn to breathe well enough we begin to have more tools to create mental fortitude.

Filmmaking in the past decade, through increased global internet access and the rise of streaming services, has become a global endeavour. What has followed is an increased demand for stories beyond Hollywood. Yet, the financial barrier of entry continues to impede filmmakers on the African continent, especially young producers, screenwriters and directors, from greenlighting projects. They are constantly consumed by among other things, loans with outrageous interest rates and co-production deal that water down the integrity of the project and sometimes, the marketability.

At present, underinvestment is hampering the growth of the film industry. Film industries in Africa could quadruple their revenue to $20 billion and create an extra 20million jobs in the creative industry. We’ve begun to see more interest in the  Nigerian film industry from foreign investors over the past 2 years with streaming services like NETFLIX and AMAZON’s entry into the market. They have started to commission local content but there are so many gatekeepers and it seems to be the more established filmmakers that have access to them, what hope does an emerging filmmaker have to gain access to the funds?

This session will discuss the future of the film industry, the potential for it to grow, where the funding is and how emerging filmmakers can tap into the eco-system being built. It will also explore the role technology is playing in helping to bridge the gap and open up a space for the democratisation of film funding, essentially the cake is here in Africa and we want every deserving filmmaker to be able to get a slice.

Young people deal with several challenges when it comes to professional and creative work: they are interested in everything but committed to nothing, and they have learned multiple skills but struggle with deploying them with intention and strategy.

In this live episode of 'The Young God' Podcast, we'll bring to the fore the age-old struggle between being a specialist or a multi-potentialite, while making the case for the latter being a vehicle for progress -- large scale social change and personal financial freedom.

Diverse and niche opportunities exist for those that are able to mix, match, and master a set of skills. Creatives today need to embrace the multi-hyphenate mindset in order to open up unprecedented doors, make deeper connections personally and professionally, and thrive in this highly competitive world.

Our guest will share their perspective and best practice on how they navigate their different interests and purists. Attendees will have the opportunity to join the conversations as well.

Pre-covid, the internet and technology revolution had already opened up new pathways for the funding, production and distribution of films in Africa. The pandemic further accelerated the way we produce and consume films.

With the big players like Netflix and Amazon with their huge budgets coming into the scene, there is an uncertainty about what the future holds for the African films told by Africans.

Our panel will discuss the cultural change and changing demographic tastes that are altering the African film industry. Panelists will share insights on the opportunities available for new entrants into the sector and the challenges being faced by the existing local players. The panel will also look at what projected technology advancements will mean for the future of African film and the people who make it, distribute it and consume it.  There’s never been a better time in our history to make, share, and watch films.

Rationality ends Where HUNGER begins, so the saying goes. The violence and looting that followed the #EndSARS nationwide protest last year is quite instructive for Nigeria. There is hunger in the land, and there is poverty occasioned by lack of jobs, social welfare and opportunities for millions of young people in Nigeria. Agriculture will help Nigeria diversify the economy and create jobs and opportunities for the mass of unemployed youth as well as address the issues of hunger and malnutrition. Agriculture is the largest employer of labour in Africa though mostly involving smallholder engagement and characterised by low tech and inadequate investment.  Climate change is an additional stressor to agriculture in Africa, thus making it imperative to promote climate smart agriculture and technology driven agricultural innovations.

This session will highlight innovative ideas and advocacy efforts to make food production and distribution sustainable, profitable and efficient. HOW ART HELPS TO GENERATE SOCIAL IDENTITY, NEW CULTURE AND BUILD A NATION
Tony Agbapuonwu
Tony Agbapuonwu
Art Bridge Project, Founder

The early generation of African modern artists created works geared towards motivating change and reshaping the African narrative. In Nigeria, radical thinkers like Ben Enwonwu and Uche Okeke engaged with themes of cultural and national identity in their groundbreaking work. What follows is a collective consciousness to create freely and a call for change. Today, this gives rise to the call for artists who understand and rewrite history, and artistic practices situated within the narrative of Africans and the larger world. This conversation will feature artists working across diverse mediums who engage with their practice as the place to raise collective consciousness and create portals for audiences to see and understand the world around them. The artists will share insights into their creative process and speak to how they capture the constant transformation of life in their works and employ creative expression to shift socio political landscapes. Ultimately, the conversation poses the question of How art reflects the time it was created in? How do artists reflect society? And how do artists utilise their privileged visibility?

Rise Irrespective is a book that takes the readers through the steps they can take to rise from whatever challenges they face.  It not only shares theories and principles they can put to practice but also provides examples of potential pathways forward based on the lived experiences of the author.

During this reading and interactive session participants and the author will explore how to navigate pain. How do we move from a place where we view pain as something happening to us and embrace new approaches that enable us to reframe the experience as one that is valuable. How do we reposition ourselves, and move forward in the midst of discomfort?

We all have the capacity to thrive and be great, even when life throws us in the opposite direction, we have the innate ability to rise from the challenges.

This will be an open and safe space for discussion, exploration and collaboration.

In 2020, the creative industry, an industry that has huge potential to address the unemployment problem across the continent was disrupted by the pandemic. The disruption of the creative industry – an industry that is majorly driven by young persons - has further deepened Africa’s unemployment problem, a big issue for the continent as Africa continues to witness population increase. Also, it is a known fact that Africa is not providing enough jobs to many skilled labours to tackle the rising unemployment in the continent.

In Africa, design, film and television, music, fashion, crafts, and the arts have been identified as key drivers in creating employment and economic growth. In Nigeria alone, the country’s popular movie industry, Nollywood, is the second largest provider of work in the country. Despite this, many people within the industry are still poorly paid, while some are also faced with issues ranging from lack of industry knowledge, lack of access to the global market, intellectual theft to a poor investment.

There is clearly a need to train and educate creatives to better leverage opportunities within the creative economy. This masterclass will Xray the potential of the continent’s creative industry and its value. It will also facilitate collaboration and the sharing of best practices on how to better execute projects in the motion picture industry.

Facilitators will take a deep dive to explore many of the challenges facing the creative industries including poor policy, low patronage, piracy and a broken value chain. Participants will benefit from insights shared and learn new approaches to address challenges.

In the end, the participants will be exposed to platforms that give Africans a creative voice and access to global markets. Also, it will afford young creatives the opportunity to learn more about the industry and how to increase their productivity and profitability to help transform the creative economy in Africa.

Most African countries devote less than 1 percent of their budget to mental health services in a continent where there is a huge demand for mental health services particularly amongst vulnerable population like women and the youth.

With depression being the most prevalent illness in the world, with over a 100million African suffering from clinical depression, and a whooping 66 million being women, it is obvious that an "easier to access for all" intervention is neccessary to mitigate this epidemic.

Origami, the Japanese art of folding paper is an evidence-based intervention that have long been harnessed by Europe and Asia in what they coined Theragami(Theraputic Origami). A selfcare low cost/ no cost intervention proven to destress, promote Community spirit and give patients and Caregivers expression is essential to improve mental health outcomes

Featuring new leading voices of contemporary art in Nigeria, this session will highlight the role of curators, writers, art dealers and collectors in the production of artistic meaning or theoretical reflection and projection of trends in contemporary art. It will explore their individual methodologies and how they generate new knowledge and new voices through their work. In addition to this, the conversation will examine the importance of research in art practice and how it formulates questions and creates emancipation from black figuration and hyper black bodies art. In turn, artistic research will be positioned as a tool for generating new perspectives, engaging social and political issues, and championing cross-disciplinary practices. The conversation further delves into the entry point for collecting art and how collectors can become patrons to support the community. It also raises the question of How do we create room for young collectors to purchase works by their contemporaries? How do we curate exhibitions for young artists? What are the steps towards a sustainable artistic career?
